'Mills, Moors and Moonrakers' Marsden / Slaithwaite
canal walk from slaithwaite to MArsden
A group of us met up for a one day photoworkshop in the beautiful village of Slaithwaite (pronounced Slawit) under the expert tutelage of Rob Knight. The morning was spent wandering around the canal area and deciding (or at least trying to decide) what aspects of the day to capture. I shot mainly digital, as I wanted to focus on the scenes and not the camera, but I couldn’t resist sneaking the Olympus Trip into my bag too. I’ve added those photos at then end of the page. The roasting hot day meant that I didn’t want carry too many cameras and equipment; I needed the backpack space for water supplies so I took the very compact Canon Power Shot G7 x Mark II.
The shady path along the canal was welcome in the hot temperatures and the occasional heron and numerous dragonflies joined us on our journey.
Our canal walk led us to Marsden, through an old mill (pictures of that later) and then up to Butterley reservoir. Too many steps for most of the group to walk up (Rob said he would go with anyone who wanted to try it, but I think he was grateful that no-one actually did!). I’d like to go back and attempt it though, looks like a great place.
The photos above give a flavour of the day, and I’ve put the others into themes that seemed to speak to me.

—— washing ——
I really like photographing washing lines, no matter where you travel in the world, there’s always clothes on a line.

——SHADOWS ——
We met a very kind security guard on our wanders, who let us in to an old mill to have a look round. I took a photo as I was descending the stairs, and I really like the effect produced by the the low light and camera movement.

I home developed the film in Cinestill Df96 monobath. Scanned with an Epson v370 and edited in Lightroom and Silver Efex.
